Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss

Perhaps you know the story of Lady Godiva and her Peeping Tom.  Well, perhaps you only think you do.  Because there were seven Lady Godivas, seven lovely sisters – Lady Clementina Godiva, Lady Dorcas J. Godiva, Lady Arabella Godiva, Lady Mitzi Godiva, Lady Lulu Godiva, Lady Gussie Godiva and Lady Hedwig Godiva.  And there were seven Peeping Brothers – Peeping Tom, Peeping Dick, Peeping Harry, Peeping Jack, Peeping Drexel, Peeping Sylvester and Peeping Frelinghuysen.  And their stories are told in the lost classic from Dr. Seuss, The Seven Lady Godivas, published originally in 1939 and “re-issued by multitudinous demand” in 1987.

ImageAs Dr. Seuss explains in the foreword, “History has treated no name so shabbily as it has the name Godiva…. A beautiful story of love, honor and scientific achievement has too long been gathering dust in the archives.” Thanks to the wonderful Dr. Seuss, Lady Godiva (and Peeping Tom) have had their reputations restored.

Happy birthday, to the good doctor. You made me want to learn how to read and for that I am eternally grateful.

  1. Yes! Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss! He was a positive influence in my life, in the lives of my kids, and in the lives of the kids I taught! I can’t imagine the world without his fun and stories! 🙂 So, I, too, say Thank You to him! 🙂
