Dog Man

According to the publisher (Scholastic) Dog Man has a 3rd grade reading level and a 2nd – 4th grade interest level. I guess that says something about my reading habits because Dog Man, the new book by Dav Pilkey (creator of Captain Underpants) is certain to find its way onto my list of the best books of 2016.

Chapter 3 is a nearly perfect detective story. It pits a bad guy with a secret lab (Petey) against a hard working police detective who happens to have the body of a man and the head of a dog (hence, Dog Man). It begins with a seemingly minor crime (Who pooped in the police chief’s office?) but when Dog Man investigates, he discover’s Petey’s plans for world domination. Petey zaps all the books in the world with his evil invention the Word-B-Gone 2000. Without books, everyone in the world becomes “supa dumb”. Can Dog Man reverse the effects of the Word-Be-Gone 2000? Can he restore the world’s books? Can he get people to start reading again? Can he find out who pooped in the chief’s office?

Don’t be supa dumb. Read Dog Man and find out.

  1. Apropos of almost nothing, I came across this, yesterday, and thought you’d appreciate: ‘Of all the other stupendous inventions,’ Galileo once remarked.
What sublimity of mind must have been his who conceived how to communicate his most secret thoughts to any other person, though very distant either in time or place, speaking with those who are in the Indies, speaking to those who are not yet born, nor shall be this thousand or ten thousand years? And with no greater difficulty than the various arrangements of two dozen little signs on paper? Let this be the seal of all the admirable inventions of men.’
